Artists’ Tuck Shop was launched in 2019 and is currently set up as a Sole Trader operation run by Artist, Curator and Fabricator, David McDiarmid, and supported by 4 fellow Glasgow-based artists: Jon Nicolson, Stuart Noble, Emma Rogers and Rachel Rogers.
In time, we have ambitions to develop the initiative into a fully fledged Social Enterprise supporting artists whose creative careers are often sidelined due to the commitments and requirements associated with balancing jobs in other sectors. Much like our team!
David, Jon, Stuart and Emma were previously involved in setting up the arts organisation Visual Artist Unit C.I.C. (2014-2018) which supported emerging and early-career artists with professional development opportunities and provided a support network to. Rachel, in the meantime, has been busy building her own jewellery business, RR Designs.
MEET OUR TEAM
David works across the fields of art, curation and fabrication, offering services in each discipline. Born in Paisley, he grew up in Ayr and studied Painting at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen 2009-2013 before completing an MLitt in Curatorial Practice between Glasgow School of Art and University of Glasgow 2018-2019. His Masters project took the form of a pop-up artist-run restaurant called Artists’ Spread, at Glasgow’s Project Café in August 2018. He has previously worked as an Assistant General Manager at a Mexican restaurant and enjoys cooking.
Graphic Design & Project Support
Jon is an artist and sales assistant, originally from Caithness. After also graduating in Painting from Gray’s, 2013, he helped co-found VAU and worked as a committee member up until 2018 when the organisation closed. Jon has a keen interest in illustration, graphic design, web design and 3D printing and is also a dab hand in the kitchen. He has been known to cook many a wonderful feast for his fellow Artists’ Tuck Shop crew!
Stuart, originally from Peterhead, is another graduate from the Painting course at Gray’s, also graduating in 2013 and likewise, served as a founder and committee member of Visual Artist Unit. Stuart makes illustrations and sculptures under the alias Bushi Artist. Stuart was one of the artists behind the Artists’ Spread project, producing an amazing series of chocolate moulded dung beetles, and working as a chef in the kitchen on the night. Alongside his practice, he works as a Bakery Assistant.
Emma also graduated from the same Painting class at Gray’s, and now lives and works in Glasgow where her practice focuses on the sculptural qualities within origami, recently working more and more with ceramics. She was also one of the artists involved in Artists’ Spread, producing a beautiful series of ceramic lemon juicers and working Front of House on the night of the one-night-only restaurant opening. Alongside her practice Emma works full time in a Bombay-style cafe, also serving as a founder and Co-director of VAU throughout the organisation’s existence.
Rachel is the designer and maker behind RR Designs. She is based in Glasgow where she creates sterling silver collections that explore the sculptural elements within jewellery design, often using 3D paper models to generate basic forms and shapes. Unlike the rest of the team, Rachel graduated from Cardonald College’s HND in Jewellery. She splits her jewellery practice with a side job at local gift shop in Glasgow’s West End. And yes, she and Emma are twins!
